Privacy policy

Last updated 21 October 2026

This policy explains what personal data howtos.video processes when you visit the site, why, and what your rights are. We keep data collection to a minimum: there are no visitor accounts, no advertising and no analytics trackers.

Who is responsible

The data controller is howtos.video, Rua Leite De Vasconcelos 64 A, 1170-200 Lisbon, Portugal. For any privacy question or request, email support@howtos.video.

What we collect and why

Server logs. Like almost every website, our server records technical details of each request: your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, your browser's user agent and any error. We use them to keep the site secure, stop abuse and fix problems. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in running a safe, working website (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). Logs are kept only for a limited time and deleted on a regular schedule, unless we need them to investigate an attack or abuse.

Guide view counts. When you open a guide, we add one to that guide's daily view count. The count itself holds no information about who opened it. To stop one person counting many times, we keep a scrambled code made from your IP address and a key that changes every day. It cannot be turned back into your IP address, cannot link your visits across days, and is deleted the next day.

Emails you send us. If you email us, we use your address and message only to reply and to handle your request. We keep the conversation for as long as needed to deal with it and for a reasonable time afterwards in case you follow up.

Cookies and browser storage

We do not set cookies for visitors. To make the site work, we save a few small items in your browser's storage:

  • your light or dark theme choice
  • the list of guides you saved, if you use the Save button
  • a short note that you already opened a guide in this session, so a view is not counted twice

When you open Saved guides, your browser sends the saved guide addresses to our server to load their cards. The saved list stays in your browser; we do not create a visitor account or a server-side saved list.

You can clear these at any time in your browser settings. Administrators who sign in to manage the site use a sign-in cookie; visitors never receive it.

YouTube videos and thumbnails

Videos are embedded with YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com). The player loads when you open a guide page, and YouTube (Google) may collect data under Google's privacy policy. Video thumbnails are loaded from YouTube's image servers (i.ytimg.com), which means your browser connects to Google to show them.

Who we share data with

We do not sell or rent personal data. Our hosting provider stores and processes server data on our behalf so the site can run. We share data with authorities only when the law requires it.

International transfers

Our server is in the United Kingdom, which the European Union recognises as providing an adequate level of data protection. When the video player or thumbnails load, your browser connects directly to Google, which may process data outside the European Economic Area under its own safeguards.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to data portability. To use any of these rights, email support@howtos.video. We reply within one month. You can also complain to the Portuguese data protection authority, the Comissão Nacional de Proteção de Dados (cnpd.pt), or to the authority where you live.

Children

howtos.video is meant for a general audience and is not aimed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes

If we change how we handle data, for example by adding analytics, we will update this page and the date above, and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
